South Australians for Climate Action formally presented their Statement on Climate Action and Biodiversity Protection to the Hon Susan Close, Deputy Premier and Minister for Climate, Environment and Water on 30 November 2022.

Forty-five signatories—including businesses, civil society organisations and high-profile individuals—to the Statement joined SACA organisers for the event in the chamber of Old Parliament House.

In her acknowledgement of country, SACA co-convenor Sue Richardson observed that the Aboriginal owners of South Australian lands had lived here for tens of thousands of years without causing harm to the climate or destruction of the environment. "We now have 10 to 20 years to learn to do the same," she said.

Co-convenor Judith Dwyer addressed the Deputy Premier on behalf of SACA, calling on the government to develop and implement a program of action for the state, including concrete targets, clear strategies, and carefully calibrated incentives to support change.

"We are looking to the Government to support innovation for climate resilience, carbon neutrality and care for country," she said. "We ask that the Government provides leadership in adapting our energy, industry, transport and agriculture to net zero emissions. We won’t achieve real change with piecemeal uncoordinated actions or targets that are not backed with clear strategy.”

"SA needs to develop and adopt a comprehensive action plan, one that will both address our important challenges and opportunities; and engage the community and business in the thinking and the work required for effective and rapid implementation of solutions. This challenge needs all of us.”

The Deputy Premier welcomed the Statement as a good foundation for the strategies being developed by her government to go from targets to achievements. The strategies include two major consultations on climate action to inform the government's planning: with the community and with industry. We expect that South Australians for Climate Action will participate in the community engagement, and that signatories will have an opportunity to participate in industry processes.

Raymond Spencer, Chair of Zen Energy and a signatory to the Statement, thanked the Premier on behalf of SACA.
